This collection represents Shakespeare in all
shades. From the tragic Hamlet, to the diabolic
Macbeth, from the light-hearted A Midsummer
Night's Dream to the saga of Pericles, Prince of
Tyre. Though written over a hundred years ago,
these tales have something to offer to every
generation. Simplified by Charles and Mary Lamb
for the pleasure of young readers, the tales
have been widely read and appreciated by
discerning adults as well.
William Shakespeare (1564-1616)
Though William Shakespeare is known to have
contributed the most to English literature,
whatever is actually known about him is through
registrar records, court records, wills,
marriage certificates and his tombstone. Born in
1564, William was the third child of John and
Mary Shakespeare. He is known to have gone to
the King's New Grammar School which taught boys
basic reading and writing, but never went on to
study at Oxford or Cambridge. He wrote
thirty-seven plays, one hundred and fifty-four
sonnets and numerous short poems. |
