Probably the most widely read and discussed
mystic poet, philosopher of the last century.
His writings have not only inspired and
influenced generations together but also have
made the entire realm of high philosophy much
simpler and graspable for the common reader.
Born in Lebanon in 1883, but having had to spend
almost his entire life in the U.S., Gibran was
proficient in both Arabic and English though
started writing rather late in English.
Kalil Gibran has about twenty five books to his
credit of which his famous trilogy - The
Prophet, The Garden of the Prophet, The Death of
the Prophet still continue to enthrall his
readers and help them reinvent themselves within
the 'chaosmos' of life. Gibran died in 1931 but
over the years his books have made it into the
list of classics and his readership has only
increased manifold only underlining the
importance of his vision of life.
The Prophet
The Prophet, Gibran's chef d'ouevre, is a
collection of 26 essays that he took almost four
years to write. The book gives the distillate of
Gibran's writings. Through the essays he
explains the mysteries of life and the means and
roads that lead to happiness. The book talks of
a spiritual awakening of the soul enabling the
reader to comprehend the perennial concussions
within the human mind. |
