Jaideep Varma was born in Kolkata in
1967, but grew up in Chandigarh and Pune. After
a short stint in Chennai, he has been in Mumbai
since 1990. He was in the advertising business,
but since 2000, has been writing fulltime. He
has also written for publications and websites
such as Gentleman, Tehelka and Rediff.
Local is his first novel.

In this narrative journey that halts at
intervals for varied characters to get on,
28-year-old Akash straddles two contrasting
worlds: a matte-finished, nighttime home – the
local train in Mumbai – and a glossy, bustling
daytime job in a multinational ad agency. As he
walks the border between motion and stillness,
the paradoxes of his dual existence transform
him in unexpected ways….
