Some documents such as Bills of Lading represent titles to goods and
also provide detailed information related to a shipment. A Bill of Lading
has to be physically transferred from one entity to another during a
typical business cycle to represent the changing ownership of the goods.
Documents such as Bills of Lading are prepared in the original and a copy. The original is treated as surrogate for physical goods. One of the vexing problem faced by businesses is how to represent physical goods by electronic documents which cannot distinguish between the original and the copy-in other words, how to make this process temper proof.
